Well, it's official. The doctor will be playing slice-n-dice on my left leg on Wednesday, August 5. All the pre-op stuff will be done on Friday, July 31 (aka the day after I pick Ro up from camp).

Nervousness is definitely setting in.

*is so late to the party*

A mosaicplasty, I think. The surgeon won't be sure until he's actually looking at the necrotized section of bone. At best, he'll be using pins to hold things in place. At worst, he'll be taking a plug of bone and cartilage from a non-weightbearing section of my knee to replace the necrotized area (mosaicplasty or OATS procedure). I'll be in a wheelchair for somewhere between 2 weeks and 2 months, depending on which procedure he does. This is going to make moving just ever so much fun!

Necrotized means dead. Dead things inside your body. But you're still moving and ambulatory.

ZOMG YOU'RE PATIENT ZERO! THE ZOMBIES ARE HERE RUNNNNNN RUUUUUUNN!

Damn, they're on to me...

I've got a condition called osteonecrosis in my left knee. for reasons unknown, blood supply to that area of bone has shut down and the bone has died. If left untreated, the bone will eventually deteriorate and crumble into bits. As small pointy bits of bone shards in the knee joint don't really sound like all that much fun, we're acting quickly on it. :)

And if the surgery is a success, it should prevent me from rising from the dead and wandering around searching for tasty brains. We think.

Dammit, now I'm thinking you need a bitchy attitude, a friend who's an oncologist, and a cane with flames.

I think there's a thing for that. Oh yeah, here.

One of the harder decisions for me lately was whether I should buy a harness for training my dog to help with the wheelchair or a replica of House's cane. ;) I went with the harness, but I'm hoping to eek out the money for the cane eventually.

I can't set anything in stone just yet, but do you think it would be of any help for me to come and help around the house on the following weekend (8th-9th)? That's pretty soon after the surgery, you may still be in the hospital and kids with relatives, etc, and I wouldn't want to be in the way. If that doesn't pan, I'd be glad to help later in the month, after school starts.

Just let me know! I'd really like to help you out some if I can! Even just taking care of the dishes, cooking, etc. *big hugs*

Honey, that would be a HUGE help! The kids actually start school on the 9th, and I've been trying to figure out how to get them there (we don't live on the bus route). Let me see if/when [livejournal.com profile] musicwolf will be able to come down, and we'll see how that works with when you are available.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!
*hugs*

I would be glad to help. :) Hmm, school starts on a Sunday? Mayhaps my wires are crossed here... Either way, at some point I'll pop in and give you a hand! Just keep me posted.

Good thoughts to you as you prepare for surgery!

I had a housemate who had surgery for necrosis in his thigh bone once (circa 1991). I think he eventually was as good as new, though I have lost track of him over the years.

At least you have a specific date set. The landlady at a baording house I used to live in said her hip replacements were the best thing that ever happened to her. Let's hope yours go as well.
