090127-N-9552I-003 MESSINA, Sicily (Jan. 27, 2009) Quartermaster 3rd Class Justin Lewis explains to local Italian media how to chart a course during a community relations event aboard the guided-missile cruiser USS Leyte Gulf (CG 55) in the port of Messina. Leyte Gulf is in Messina as a representative of "The Great White Fleet" for memorial ceremonies of an earthquake and tsunami, which devastated the region 100 years ago. USS Leyte Gulf (CG 55) and USS Robert G. Bradley (FFG 49) are conducting port calls in Pointe-Noire, Republic of Congo, and Mindelo, Cape Verde, in support of Africa Partnership Station. The ships will promote theater security cooperation through training and interoperability exercises.

USS Leyte Gulf (CG 55) completes a port call in Mindelo, Cape Verde in support of Africa Partnership Station. The visit featured a law enforcement detachment patrol with Cape Verde Coast Guard personnel leading the boardings.
