Good Lord. That just breaks my heart, and it reminds me too much of what my mother in law went through when she was dying of breast cancer.
I had some issues myself when I wanted to get private insurance after my COBRA benefits ran out when I lost my job last June. I was told I was uninsurable by three different companies because I have bipolar disorder. Luckily I have Tricare, but it provides shoddy psychiatric care, and I've been paying out of pocket for two out of four medications I have to take because they are so new that the base dispensary doesn't even carry them yet, and there are no generics. I'm glad for Tricare because it does cover the basics, but insurance is not a one size fits all deal.
