I hope everyone had a good time with the Zombipocalypse. Part of me really, really wishes I was still in academia--I would love to do some research on the phenomenon of the participatory narrative, interactive literature and global blogging. What we saw yesterday was truly a beautiful thing. I hope it isn't forgotten.

For me, the hardest part was playing dead for 10 hours. [livejournal.com profile] alphafem in particular made my heart bleed with the did-it-or-din't-it nature of her last posts. The concept of the virus being spread by a kiss? Pure gold.

I know some folks got offended by the nature of the Zombipocalypse. I am truly sorry if I offended. I hope that looking at things in the fresh light of a zombiless morning makes it somewhat less offensive.

New folks--I'm not normally this entertaining. Most of my journalling recently has been angsting over a recent breakup. Personally, I've needed an exercise in rebirth. The zombipocalypse has worked admirably.

The unshatterable glass wasn't as unshatterable as we thought.

We had three military and one civvie who ignored the "No Weapons" sign at the front entrance and had guns on them when the lockdown started. They bought us some time. We rounded up the parents and kids from storytime, the folks in the computer lab and the few survivors in the stacks and got them locked into the bathrooms with most of the library staff. It's cramped, but those are the only rooms without windows. What little food we had is in there with them. Hopefully they'll outlast whatever this parasite is that keeping the ghouls going.

The guys with the guns and the people who've been bitten (like me) are holed up in the workroom area. We can hear the ghouls scratching on the doors that lead out to the main floor, but they haven't gotten through yet. The staff lounge has been set up as the holding area for the bitees. There's two kids, a mom and four random folks from the lab. I'm the only staff member to be bitten and survive--F and D went down when the first wave broke through, along with M from Kids. They just got swarmed over.

My hand is swollen to three times normal size. The flesh around the bite has already necrotized. There are angry red and black streaks going out from the bite site, following my blood vessels. The bite is infected. I'm infected.

One of the military guys is going to give the final blow to all of us who've been bitten. He's going to start with the kids, so they won't know what's coming. He says it'll be quick and as painless as possible. I volunteered to be last. I'm the staff representative; it's my responsibility to make sure it all goes smoothly. If someone could check on Remus when it's safe to travel--he's a good dog, and he deserves better than starving in an empty house.

Oh, he's started.

[livejournal.com profile] musicwolf, please make sure the kids always know how much I love them.

We seem to have attracted our very own horde.

Might as well call a spade a spade. They're zombies. Actually they're ghouls, as [livejournal.com profile] cousin_sue pointed out. Whatever they are, I am NOT enjoying suddenly living in a Jonathon Coulter video, thankyouverymuch!

Nearly three of the four outer walls of this building are floor-to-ceiling windows. There are ghouls lined up along the walls, pounding on the glass. Thank Og that after the last major break-in, the county replaced all the windows with shatter-resistant materials. We should be ok.

Still not feeling well. Been throwing up, and I'm covered in sweat. I'm kind of shaky, too. My blodd sugar must be crashing from the stress.

N and the officer didn't make it back over here. They got attacked by a group of guys coming out of the extended-stay hotel next to the carwash.

P decided we needed to put the library on lockdown. We've closed the doors. No one is getting in or out until the police get here. S and I got the... the body into one of the study carrels and locked it in. F and D, the other custodians, are cleaning up the biohazard mess. I think that volume of the OED is a total loss.

We've got a storytime going on in the back. Staff members are letting the moms know there's been an "incident" and the storytime will be extended. I don't think the computer users know anything's going on yet. Not like they'd leave the library anyways--they'll stay in their seats as long as they can.

I... I really am not feeling well. I'm all queasy. There are some folks on my f-list who are trained for dealing with things like killing people. I'm not.

I was sitting at the desk a minute ago (covering for S while she was getting a car payment thingie straightened out). This guy walks up. Typical patron--glassy-eyed stare, shuffling, mumbling under his breath instead of talking. I asked him if I could help him, and he mumbled something. I asked him to repeat himself. He grabbed my arm and FUCKING BIT MY HAND!!!!!!!

I screamed, grab the last volume of the OED (just back from another patron), and whacked him upside the head. He... the side of his head caved in. He dropped.

Oh gods, I've killed someone. I think I'm going to be sick. There were maggots in his hair.

Sent N the custodian over to the carwash to grab one of the police people still investigating the shooting. P has washed out the teethmarks on my hand with alcohol and bandaged it. Hopefully we'll get an ambulance here soon.

I can't believe this.

Gonna go throw up now.

OMG I just witnessed a murder. OK, maybe it was a self defense thing, but still.

I was ogling the eye-candy at the car wash next door (why yes, I *am* a dirty old woman, thank you for asking) and I noticed one of the homeless guys that hangs out there acting strangely. It looked like he was panhandling from one of the Army guys washing his car. They got into some sort of a scuffle and the homeless guy attacked the Army dude. Army dude reached into his car and pulled out a gun, then he shot the homeless dude in the head.

911 still has all circuits busy. I called the library director's office, who called the county manager, and there's several police cars next door right now. I just talked to the officer that walked over here and told her what I saw. She's talking to other people in the library right now.

I asked the officer about my neighbor attacking Lily. She said they're swamped right now, and it would probably be tomorrow before anyone could come out to take my report.

My Elves are Different is doing an incredible job tracking all these weird action stories going on right now. A lot of people are using the Z word. C'mon foks, can't be zombies. As much as we'd all like to live in a world where physics can be suspended and things like that can happen, we don't. Get real.

A zombie did NOT eat my dog. The guy next door is high on something new.

Still can't get through to 911. Tried the non-emergency line, and that's busy, too. I keep hearing random gunshots outside. Not that unusual for this neighborhood, but not exactly normal, either.

Wish I had a gun.

Oh. My. God.

Lily woke me up an hour before the alarm goes off to go outside, as usual. I stumbled to the door and let the dogs outside.

The creepy dude next door was standing next to the fence, just staring at my house. Lily being Lily, she ran right up to him. He grabbed her neck and... I can't believe I saw this. He picked her up and bit out her throat.

OK, I'm freaking out.

The dude just ATE MY DOG.

I got Remus back inside and locked the doors. I've been trying to call 911, and I keep getting a busy signal.

Oh gods.

What the hell is going on?

Strange people in the library tonight. Even for my library, they were strange. Vacant expressions, lots of drooling, and the smell. EW! We had to have Officer J escort one guy out after he tried to bite another patron!

Ugh. Please, let there be some sanity at work in the morning.

I did a quick look-see through the usual sources. Something weird is going on. It's not even a full moon, and my news of the weird feed brought me this:
Police run over bum in New Zealand.
Massive cemetery disturbances and attacks by meth addicts in Australia.
Voluntary medical quarantine in Kuwait.
Guerilla uprising in the Philipines.
