deza: (Clue by Oar)
A few years back, I was really active in SCA stuff. I arranged a couple of kick-ass demos at the library (one had over 1000 people walk through the doors, and had them lining up to watch practice bouts), served as the unofficial canton MOM, and did a bunch of behind-the-scenes work for putting together bids for events, including helping to scout out sites. Years before that, in another Kingdom I did more MOM stuff, kid-wrangled during fighter practices, and served as the Chatelaine's invisible Girl Friday while helping set up for annual events. I was even a fencer, for all the good that did. With all that I did, no one in any group thought I'd done enough to merit being nominated for an AOA.

Now that I'm physically incapable of doing much of anything, it's not likely to happen.

It bothers me that I've been part of the SCA for nearly 20 years (I first started showing up at stuff in 92), active in three Kingdoms and multiple groups, and I've received one award in all that time, a baronial-level service award. It bothers me even more when I see people who've been in for 6 months and seldom do more than strap on armor get their AOAs.

I don't want to rag on the fighters - there are some truly great folks out there, and in my current condition I can't help but be a little jealous of people capable of physical pursuits. But really, would it be so hard to show some love to the people who work behind the curtains, too? Events don't put themselves together, and there's a lot more going on than a group of armor-clads wandering onto a field and someone throwing together a BBQ.

I know, Pity Party, table for one. I just wanted to get it out of my system once and for all.
