No, really, I mean it. Excrement, dung, ordure, night soil, stool, poop, caca, turds, crap, number 2, poo-poo, shit. Get your inner 12-year-old out now, folks.

Most people experience constipation at one time or another. Constipation is technically defined as passing stool fewer than three times a week; passing hard, dry stool; or having to strain excessively to have a bowel movement. Poor diet, medications, lack of exercise and dehydration are common causes, as are certain medical conditions such as IBS and pregnancy. It hits women more than men, children more than adults, and people who have limited mobility more than anyone. Like it or not, odds are at some point in your life you'll be stopped up. Straining to poop can result in hemorrhoids, fissures, fistula, or rectal prolapse. So what do you do about it?

Carla Zilber Smith was a comedian and a songwriter, who paased away on May 21, 2010 from ALS (aka "Lou Gehrig's Disease). At her funeral, she had one final surprise for her family and friends - a video message she'd made before she died.

If you want to read more about Carla, go to carlamuses.blogspot.com, where she blogged for several years. Carla is the subject of the upcoming documentary "Leave Them Laughing: A Musical Comedy About Dying," which you can find out about at leavethemlaughingfilm.com.

Do It Day

I hearby proclaim June 25 to be Do It Day.

You know that wild idea you had, the one where all your friends looked at you and yelled "DOOOOO EEEEEEEEEEET!" with a bad fake Mexican accent? Yeah, that one. This is your day. Do it.

Get the tattoo. Go volunteer where you woudn't normally be seen. Kiss the hottie. Swing your kids around until they fall over giggling. Step outside your safe little boundaries. Do something that you've always wanted to do, or go somewhere you've always wanted to go, or try something that you always wanted to try but scares you a little, or just do something outrageous and worry about the consequences later, or say yes to a ridiculous dare. Basically, it's about saying yes when you usually say no.

Grab a hold of life.

Do it.

The thing you think is the worst thing imaginable can be endured and occasionally even enjoyed.

Losing things makes you fiercely love what you still have.

Plans don’t always work out perfectly. Big fucking deal.

If you read all the titles of all the self-help books and treat them as a kind of list of rules, you don’t have to waste your time on reading the whole book – Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff – nuff said! Bad Things Happen to Good People – no shit, Sherlock.

Show up to your own life. Disable the auto-pilot and live this bitch.

It’s more fun to write about snogging British men than it is to actually do it.

Even if it hurts to laugh, even if it makes you stop breathing, it is the best thing to do. Laugh every day.

Have as much sex as you can. I am as serious as a heart attack.

When you are facing death you won’t give a shit about the shit you have. You will yearn to hear your kid laugh one more time, for an old lover to hold you and for your friends and family to be near. You’ll remember wet sand between your toes, the smell of fall leaves burning, the feeling of holding a warm cup between your hands and soft lips touching yours.

When you have a fatal, debilitating illness, people will listen to anything you say so you can pontificate until their eyes all roll into the backs of their heads. It’s awesome.

People always ask me “is there anything I can do for you?” Well, I am very well taken care of but there are two things:

1) Set aside time to live like you are going to die and then love the fuck out of your life and the people in it.
2) When you see someone in a wheelchair, don’t treat us like we just won a medal in the Special Olympics. When you patronize us, we silently judge you.
