Getting around

Andrew went out of town again last night. I'm a little peeved about this one, since it's a pleasure cruise with friends and I'm still at home watching the kids. I understand he needs a break. He works hard, gets sent up and down the east coast on a regular basis, and is more stressed than he likes to let on. Top that with dealing with my medical stuff and... well, yeah, guy deserves a break. I'd like to have a break, too. The only "time off" I've had since October 2008 was four days over Christmas last year. Hopefully we'll get at least a family trip in this summer.
One of the things that didn't get done before he left but needed to be done was enrolling the kids for summer sports activities here on base. These things fill up quickly -- Kyle already missed out on soccer because we put off registration for a bit, so he's doing football instead. We wanted to make sure Rowan got into cheerleading (her age-group was the last one with open slots), so I needed to drop the registration forms off today.
The Youth Activities Office is a little over a mile and a half from the house.
Now, I've been nervous about taking Guinness out lately. He dumped me three times in one day, going to say hi to kids and dogs and not noticing he rammed me into curbs and bikes. I still have the bruises, two weeks after the fact. So going out for a long trip in an area neither of us really knew was a huge leap of faith on my part.
It went surprisingly well. He was an absolute angel going past the stables, although I could see him thinking "Damn, those are some BIG dogs!" We met other walkers, joggers and bike riders both ways, and he was fine with them. While we were at the office, one of the ladies brought him some water, and he was quite happy to get loved on by strangers. Most of the time we were there he just quietly laid down either next to or behind my chair.
While we were waiting for all the information to go into the computer, another lady came in to register her son for football. Guinness noticed her and kept edging toward her. She asked to pet him (I said yes, of course), and then she told me her dog was dying of cancer. She loved on Guinness for a while before commenting that he knew she was sad and needed cheering up. I think she was right. Guinness is very good about sensing where I am emotionally, and he'll go to lengths to make me happier. His favorite thing is showing up with something he knows he's not supposed to have in his mouth to get me up out of bed and moving around. Last time it was a box of cereal. I hadn't thought he'd do the same for random strangers. It makes me wish I could get him sertified as a therapy dog. Maybe sometime in the future.
He has let me know that three miles was quite far enough on a hot summer morning, thank you. We took a couple of breaks on the way home, just sitting quietly in a shady area where he could stretch out on the grass and cool off. I was a little worried when I noticed he looked rabid from the drool hanging off his chin. Once we got home and he stretched out on the hardwood floor for a bit he was fine. Hopefully now he gets why I tell him to go slow sometimes.
I'm glad it went well this trip.
