I'm still losing hair. Yay. I've got one scarf now to cover the loss, but let's face it--I'm a girl (shocking, I know) and I like to feel pretty. I'm hoping once the current money crunch eases up, we can afford for me to get some nice tubans, head wraps, maybe even a wig or two.

Since this is still in the dreaming phase, give me some ideas. Would it be totally ridiculous for a woman just shy of 40 to wear some wild colored wigs? What styles flatter a round face? Is it true blondes have more fun? Is a scarf cap really necessary? I'd also love links to reputable dealers, if you know of any.

Thank you, LJ fairies!

Well, as you know, my hair DID fall out (yay, MTX), and I just received my wigs, and I LOVE them. Even my over-critical parents loved them. And they were only $40 apiece.

It's NOT ridiculous for you to wear them, in any style or color. Hair loss sucks, so, if it has to happen, have fun with it. Buy a blue wig. Rock out something different. That's what I did, and it HAS lifted my spirits (even shaving my head, although terrifying, is starting to make me feel better - because I controlled the loss before it could completely control me).

I got my wigs right here (http://www.voguewigs.com/), and again, I love them. Decent prices (mostly), realistic textures, and quick shipping (I received mine in four days). So I'd definitely recommend them.

You deserve to have something fun like a pretty wig in your life. I'd say go for it! *hugs*

PS - my face is round, and on voguewigs.com, and well as wigs.com, it says what styles best suit a round face - click a wig, and it will say in the write-up which face shape it will look best with :)

I think you should wear any wig or other headcovering that makes you feel fabulous. Screw 40, you know? Just because we're...uh...not spring chickens, we don't have to turn into matrons.

As for head wraps, I know a few good sources, but most of them are Islamic (OTOH, some of them have fabulous scarves that you can wear any way you want)...BTW, [livejournal.com profile] modest_style has some *really* good links, and is very much open to such questions.

ETA...links you might be able to use for scarves and headwraps:
All but one of these are really for hijab. However, shayla and shawl styles can be adapted to be just headscarves (al-amara, niqab, khimar: probably not.

Very good prices.

http://www.veiledbydesign.com/
They have these gorgeously coordinated sets, lots of stuff can be adapted.

http://www.artizara.com
There is nothing on their site I wouldn't wear...

http://anokhiusa.com
Non-Islamic, lots of pretty textiles.

Hope this helps on the do-rag side of things :)...

It does, thank you! My one worry would be accidentally offending someone by looking like I was aping the religios tradition. Don't know if that makes sense to anyone but me, though.

No, it makes perfect sense to me. That comes up in the comm I mentioned. As a rule, Muslim hijab (and this is why I say al-Amira and khimar won't be readily adaptable) covers *the neck* and part of the chest (khimar comes lower down), as well as -- for most observant Sunni, at least -- covering ALL hair.

Many Shi'ite women (and Sufis) don't cover quite as much; I'm a lousy example because I have a hard time just keeping it on my head :P.

The fact is if you have anything on your head, people are going to assume. You'd think it would be obvious -- and to most people who might not even know the distinction, it IS obvious when someone's hijabi versus when they're just wearing a scarf.

If only I had an address that could receive packages! This is the downside of living in a short-term vacay rental.

I think this is the Perfect time to wear wild-colored wigs! A wig cap is very necessary because wigs itch, especially on sensitive scalps. Find one of those wig/beauty shops in town that let you try on the wigs. They usually make you buy a disposable stocking (for an ick and germ barrier) and have display models you can try on in the store. If you can find someone who wears wigs a log to show you the easiest way to put them on it helps, too.

When my grandmother had chemo, she had a few wigs, but found she preferred soft, knitted caps the most.
Some places knit and donate caps for people Like this place.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, hon. I do have sensitive skin (I'm allergic to wool of all things!) So I'll definitely get a wig cap. Hmmm, looks like I'll have Andrew take me exploring for a wig store--I don't trust my driving ability enough to do it by myself these days.

I'm 47, and have had some cancer scares in the last ten years, and hell yeah you can and should wear outre colors and styles.

I sure as hell plan to when the inevitable hits me [and it is inevitable because of my family history], no matter what age. I've already done my research.

The two links I recommend are:

Good luck!

H. just cut off about 12 inches of her honey-blond dresses to donate to locks of love or some other institution - but if you know anyone who knows how to make wigs she'd be happy to donte it to you instead. It would probably end up something like a chin length bob, but the hair is strong and silky. You could dye it to the colour you prefer. Right now, it's in three braids.

This is a REALLY lovely idea, and so generous.

(I wish I could donate my hair; it's far too long anyway -- but my hair is fragile and damaged so probably not any good for this.)

FWIW, I think this should be followed up on, if a wigmaker could be found...

Thank you, hon! That's an incredibly generous offer. I'm tearing up over it.

Due to our current situation, I'd have no idea where to even start looking for a wig maker. I'd be honored if you'd continue on your original plan and get it to a charity, so it could go on to someone in more desperate need. *hugs*

Oh hell yeah. Wear whichever wigs/head coverings strike your fancy. The hell with what anyone else thinks is appropriate. If you like it, go with it. Hell, since it's a wig/scarf/etc, it's even easier to remove than *nail polish*. So if you don't like it, you can return it and go with a new look. :)
